Introducing the company building smaller, cheaper and safer nuclear energy for the future

NANO Nuclear Energy Inc.

The path to zero starts here. NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. is a company emerging from the shared micro-Small Modular Reactor (mSMR) and Advanced Nuclear Reactor (ANR) ambitions of a world-class nuclear technical team filled with influential and foremost nuclear experts in the field, working alongside business and industry professionals, possessing strong relationships with both government, and the private and public nuclear industries.

The company is committed to building smaller, cheaper and safer nuclear energy for the future by incorporating the latest technology into its own proprietary novel reactor designs, intellectual properties, and research methods. Currently in technical development is “ZEUS”, NANO Nuclear Energy’s first-generation portable, on-demand capable advanced nuclear micro reactor.

NANO Nuclear Energy intends to progress its collaborative research projects towards development, rigs and models, zero-power reactors and ultimately towards reactor manufacture and deployments. Their nano nuclear reactors could be deployed to remote locations to provide energy to residential, commercial, major mining, industrial, shipping, oil and gas, military, medical use and construction projects. Additionally, the company looks to expand globally, especially in emerging growth countries that lack energy grid infrastructure.

mSMRs produce between one and 20 megawatts of thermal energy that could be used directly as heat or converted to electric power. Generating clean and reliable electricity for commercial use or for non-electric applications, such as district heating, water desalination and hydrogen fuel production, mSMRs are a highly adaptable and portable alternative to traditional nuclear reactors.

In collaboration with the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) as part of the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) Resource Team program, NANO Nuclear is working to develop its proprietary portable and on-demand capable micro-Small Modular Reactor (mSMR), “ZEUS”. The “ZEUS” design will be modular and enable it to connect with local power grids or power systems, revolutionising how remote communities, mining projects, need for power after natural disasters and military bases, among others, obtain consistent electricity.

Featuring a world-class leadership team, NANO Nuclear is poised to help advance the mSMR industry and the way the world utilises nuclear energy. The company is led by Chief Executive Officer James Walker, a nuclear physicist, whose professional engineering experience includes nuclear reactors, mines, submarines, chemical plants, factories, mine processing facilities, infrastructure, automotive machinery and testing rigs. Walker was the UK Ministry of Defence project lead and manager for constructing the new Rolls-Royce Nuclear Chemical Plant; he was the UK Subject Matter Expert for the UK Nuclear Material Recovery Capabilities and was a technical project manager for constructing the UK reactor core manufacturing facilities.

Additionally, Winston Chow, who serves as the company’s chief policy officer, previously served as senior advisor to the US Department of Energy(DOE) on East Asia, where he implemented two US-China Agreements on clean energy between Presidents Barack Obama and Hu Jintao. Chow has led the international adoption of sustainable energy and infrastructure for almost two decades, helping finance and deploy more than $2 billion in projects and his career in the renewable energy space involved building the world’s largest solar power plant and providing access to clean energy to more than 37 million people. He’s also worked across Asia and Africa as a diplomat for intergovernmental UN observer organisation, Global Green Growth Institute, to decarbonise China’s global Belt and Road Initiative.

Finally, the company’s founder, chairman and president, Jay Yu, is a serial entrepreneur with more than 16 years of capital markets experience on Wall Street. Honored in 2021 as one of The Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in business, Yu is an active philanthropist, has invested into a multitude of companies and has advised hundreds of private and public company executives with corporate advisory services such as capital funding, mergers & acquisitions, structured financing, IPO listings and other business development services.

Moreover, the company recently added two key additional executive corporate advisors. David Huckeba, worked at United Parcel Service (UPS) for 34 years and has held numerous leadership positions in operations, industrial engineering and in the corporate transportation planning group. Since his retirement in 2010, Huckeba has been a serial entrepreneur. Dr. Lassina Zerbo is a nuclear science diplomat and a geophysicist focusing on Africa responses to global challenges. Dr. Zerbo currently serves as a chairman of the board of directors at the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board (RAEB) and was a member of the World Economic Forum and vice-chair of the Global Agenda Council on Nuclear Security from 2014-2016.

Additionally, the company’s Nuclear Technical team boasts the likes of Dr. Jeffrey L. Binder PhD, MBA, who serves as the head of nuclear laboratory and technologies and Dr. Peter Hosemann, who serves as the head of nuclear reactor design and materials, as well as Dr. Ian Farnan, the company’s lead of nuclear radiation and materials and Dr. Eugene Shwageraus, lead of nuclear reactor rngineering. Furthermore, its collaboration with the National Reactor Innovation Center and the Idaho National Laboratory, grants NANO Nuclear access to some of the top minds and facilities in the United States and its membership in numerous international nuclear organizations ensures that its name is seen around the world. The INL is the nation’s center for nuclear energy research and development, and also performs research in each of DOE’s strategic goal areas: energy, national security, science and the environment.

The importance of government involvement in accelerating innovation in the nuclear space has come to the fore in recent years, as numerous countries have laid the groundwork to help develop the marketplace. In 2020, the NRC issued the first of its kind final safety evaluation report for an SMR in the United States. In 2021, TerraPower, a start-up co-founded by Bill Gates, choseKemmerer, Wyoming, as the preferred location for its first demonstration reactor. On the other side of the Atlantic, the UK government backed Rolls-Royce’ SMR project with a £210 million investment. This year, a strategic plan on the use of SMRs was released on March 29 by the governments of New Brunswick, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Additionally, on April 19, the US Department of Energy (DOE) plans to seek applications and sealed bid submissions under the $6 billion Civil Nuclear Credit Program (CNC) to support the continued operation of US nuclear reactors.

NANO Nuclear aims to be a truly vertically-integrated company with the ability to reshape the way the general public perceives and interacts with nuclear energy. Its ambitions lie not only with advanced micro-SMRs, but also in other areas of Nuclear Energy, such as HALEU energy fuel fabrication and distribution, as well as uranium mining and more.

NANO Nuclear Energy Inc.will be presenting at the ClimateTech Investing Forum 2022 in Lausanne, Switzerland, on December 6 and 7.
