Swiss chalet

By Attracta Mooney

Verbier is fast becoming the winter playground of Europe's elite. It's a firm favourite of the British royals, while numerous family business owners, bankers and celebrities are known to own chalets in the area.

Its appeal lies in its excellent skiing – it's considered one of the best off-piste areas in the world. There is also plenty on offer to those looking for apres-ski activities, particularly in the lively bars around Place Centrale. During the summer, Verbier Festival – which runs from 20 July to 5 August this year – draws visitors and internationally renowned musicians, including Leif Ove Andsnes and Julian Lloyd Webber.

“The Verbier cocktail is concocted of its easy access to Geneva and Italy, high altitude skiing, sunny exposition and its infamous nightlife. It is an irresistible blend that keeps fun lovers coming back for seconds and thirds," said Jeremy Rollason, managing director of Alpine Homes, an associate of Savills.

But a property in the Swiss resort doesn't come cheap - expect to pay as much as CHF30,000 to CHF35,000 (€24,900 to €29,000) a square metre. This makes a prime property in Verbier more expensive than in Manhattan ($23,300(€17,500) a square metre), but cheaper than London ($48,900 a square metre), according to Knight Frank’s Prime Property Residential Index, which was released in March.
