Ferragamo to host runway show inside the Louvre

By Giulia Cambieri

Do a pair of stilettos and a handbag deserve a place in a museum? The answer is yes, if the Louvre’s decision to host Salvatore Ferragamo’s next fashion show is anything to go by.

The family-controlled Italian group, which is famous for its shoes, bags and silk accessorises, will present its 2012 pre-season collection inside the famous Parisian museum on 21 June.

Designed by creative director Massimiliano Giornetti, the collection will be presented on a 120-metre runway, behind the archways of the Denon wing’s colonnade.

It will be the first time that the museum allows a fashion show to take place inside its building. In the past, similar events have always been held in the courtyard next to the glass pyramid.

Ferragamo, currently chaired by second-generation Ferruccio Ferragamo, will also sponsor one of the museum’s latest exhibitions, which focuses on The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne – a recently restored oil painting completed by Leonardo da Vinci between 1503 and 1519.

“It is a great honour for our family and our fashion group to have been chosen ... to sponsor this exclusive event,” Ferruccio, son of company founder Salvatore Ferragamo, said in a statement.

“Endless creativity, an innovative aesthetic, artisanal roots and groundbreaking research have always characterised the Italian genius as embodied by Leonardo da Vinci.

“These are values that have inspired our work and the reality of our company since my father’s time,” he added.
