US construction magnate dies aged 77

Edward A Fish, the founder of family-owned construction conglomerate EA Fish Companies, has died at the age of 77.

The Boston-based business leader and philanthropist served as chairman of EA Fish until his death on Tuesday. Fish was known for his commitment to creating affordable housing alongside the commercial construction projects the business also ran.

"My dad's impact on my life cannot be overstated," his son John Fish said in a statement. "He was an incredible role model and leader who led by example and stressed the value of hard work and integrity."

Fish (pictured) began his career working in the family company Peabody Construction, started by his grandfather in the 1890s. He worked in various voles, including serving as president, until he stepped down in 1995 to be replaced by his son Edward Fish Jr.

He went on to found several companies including Peabody Properties, now managed by his two daughters Karen Fish-Will and Melissa Fish-Crane, and Suffolk Construction Company, which is run by John Fish and had 2009 revenues of $1.7 billion.

These, and several other companies, make up the EA Fish empire that is still fully owned by the family.

Fish was also a renowned philanthropist in his local area along with his wife Gretchen, who supported the Fish Centre for Women's Health and the Women's Hospital in Boston. He is survived by his wife, five sons, two daughters and 13 grandchildren.
