Mars, LL Bean, to speak at Americas Families in Business Conference

By Alexandra Newlove

The families behind Mars, LL Bean, and Lockton are just some of the speakers which attendees at Campden Wealth's 11th Americas Families in Business Conference can look forward to.

This private event on 6 and 7 March will explore the impact that blended families, disruptive technologies, and political instability are having on the family business landscape—and how families can innovate and adapt during times of rapid change.

Highlights from the stellar speaker line-up include Shawn Gorman, executive director of LL Bean; fourth-generation family member and Mars director Alan Airth; Elena Couttenye, president of Couttenye & Co; and Marshall Lockton, senior executive at Lockton Companies.

David Braham, Campden Wealth Americas regional manager, said many of the businesses attending were founded between 50 and 100 years ago, and running a successful company has changed dramatically since.

“The narrative of this year's event is very different,” he said.

“Families are seeing the world differently and are looking to radically change. They know now that if they are standing still, they are going to fail in a world where companies in Silicon Valley can go from being worth $0 to $10 billion in 10 years.”

With that in mind, the theme of this year's conference is “Understanding the Modern Family with a 21st Century Business”.

Braham said attendees will also get an inside look into what goes on within multi-billion-dollar families, with speakers from some of the world's largest family businesses.

Braham added that while politics is always a talking point during networking, Campden conferences in North America this year would focus more explicitly on recent changes to the US tax code, and what they mean for family businesses and family offices.

Held at the Ritz-Carlton, Coconut Grove in Miami, the conference is exclusively for high-net worth business-owning families and their advisers, providing a safe and private environment for networking and sharing experiences.
