Love your mum' Say it sweetly with Mother's Day treats from a family business

By Rashmi Kumar

If you've missed all the advertisements jolting you to the fact that Mother’s Day is taking place in the UK today and haven’t got your mum the perfect gift, don't worry. Just pop to your nearest shop, as one British family business has introduced special sweet treats just for the occasion.

Swizzels Matlow, famous for its range of candies, has created new messages for its Love Hearts brand to celebrate Mother’s Day.

The iconic fruit-flavoured treats that are characterised by short, love-related messages will now feature 22 new Mother’s Day slogans, such as 1 In A Million and Super Mum, in an “I love you” tube.

Based in Derbyshire, Swizzels Matlow said the sweets, which are tablet-shaped, have no artificial colouring and are suitable for vegetarians.

This is the first time ever that the group, which is the UK’s largest family-owned independent sugar confectionary business, is selling Mother’s Day gifts.

“We thought it was time we celebrated our wonderful mums on a grand scale,” said Sarah-Louise Heslop, marketing manager at the company.

Well known for sweets such as Drumstick Lollies and Rainbow Drops, Swizzels Matlow traces its roots back to the 1920s when Maurice and Alfred Matlow set up Matlow Brothers.

It was later merged with the factory of rival David Dee – and the two families still own the business today.
