Fortunes of Indonesian ultra-wealthy soar
The combined fortunes of Indonesia’s ultra-high net worth population grew by 47% last year, as the Asian country benefited from the commodities boom.
There are now an estimated 775 individuals resident in Indonesia worth at least $30 million (€22.9 million), an increase of about 50 people since the release of the World Ultra Wealth Report 2011.
Wealth-X estimates that, collectively, UHNW Indonesians are worth $125 billion.
The country, the fourth largest in the world by population, is the biggest exporter of tin and coal globally and is south-east Asia’s largest economy.
It is expected to grow strongly next year – GDP is predicted to increase by 6.4%, slightly down from last year’s 6.5% – which should further boost the coffers of the country’s super-rich.
“Indonesia’s overall economic landscape is bright as its resources sectors continue to thrive, driven by Chinese and general Asian demand,” said Wealth-X.
The country is home to a number of well-known family business figures, including Aburiza Bakrie and his family. According to figures from Forbes, the Bakries saw their fortune drop by $1.2 billion last year.
The wealthiest Indonesians are the Hartono Brothers, Susilo Wonowidjojo and Eka Tjipta Widjaja, worth $32.5 billion collectively, according to Forbes.
