Families dominate UK rich list
Some of the world's most prominent families have dominated a new list which displays the UK's most affluent individuals. The list, by Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper The Sunday Times, shows how the UK's super-rich are getting even richer as the combined wealth of the top 200 rose by ?45 billion in the last year.
Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal (pictured) and family top the list with ?35 billion. Mittal, who was ranked fourth richest in the world earlier in the year, saw his fortune rise ?10 billion from last year ? mainly thanks to Mittal Steel's merger with Arcelor to create the world's largest steel firm. His son Aditya is the firm's CFO.
The Duke of Westminster, whose family own property giant Grosvenor Group, was ranked third with ?9 billion. Coming in fourth were brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja. Sri and Gopi, along with their two other brothers, who are based in India, run the Hinduja Group that their father turned into a global business empire. The brothers are worth ?8 billion.
Hans Rausing, who took over his father's business, Tetra Pak, with his brother Gad, features seventh on the list with ?6.8 billion. His son, Hans Kristian was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of possessing crack cocaine and heroin (click here to read more). Gad's children Kirsten and Jorn Rausing, who inherited his share when he died, are 14th with a fortune of ?4.4 billion.
Eighth on the list with estimated wealth of ?5.9 billion is Norwegian shipping magnate John Fredriksen. Both of the tycoon's twin daughters have been working in his vast empire for several years, with one joining the board in February (click here to read more).
Sean Quinn, founder of financial services firm Quinn Group, is ranked 12th in the list. His wife and their five children all hold a stake in the firm, giving the Quinn family a fortune of ?4.7 billion.
Heineken heiress Charlene de Carvalho and her husband are ranked 13th with ?4.6 billion and shipping tycoon Sammy Ofer and his son Eyal are 15th with ?4.2 billion. Nicky Oppenheimer, the third-generation chairman of diamond company De Beers, was ranked 18th and is worth an estimated ?3.6 billion.
