Google’s chairman is among several tech and media executives investing in an Uber-style app that provides helicopter services for New Yorkers.

Blade launched a year ago and flies users to destinations such as the Hamptons, Cape Cod or Martha’s Vineyard, as well as local airports. A single trip starts around $575.

Eric Schmidt, alongside Barry Diller and David Zaslavs has invested $6 million in the company, which was started with just $50,000. The latest investment values the company at $25 million.

US women are showing a greater interest in alternative investments than men, according to new research, challenging traditional stereotypes that female investors are risk averse.

According to research by US investment firm MainStay Investments, 60% of women surveyed expect alternatives to become a core part of their portfolio over the next five to 10 years.

By comparison, only 47% of men expect the likes of commodities, private equity, and hedge funds to become a “mainstream” part of their investment holdings over that same period.

Forget attending packed auctions and phone bids, buying a top-end collectible is now just a click away. 

In December of 2012 Edward Hopper’s painting October on Cape Cod (pictured, below right) was sold at auction by Christie’s for $9.6 million (€7.1 million). Nothing unusual about that, you might say. But the buyer wasn’t in the room, and not even on the end of a phone, but watching the auction live through an online stream. That is, so far, the most that anybody has paid for a painting while bidding over the internet.

Family offices are allocating money to Bitcoin from two opposing ends of the risk-return spectrum, according to the founder of a fund dedicated to the digital currency.

The Bitcoin Investment Trust, launched in September last year, currently has net assets of $53.9 million (€39.5 million) with around 150 investors, and New York-based founder Barry Silbert says family offices are one of three main groups invested in the private fund.

The others are tech entrepreneurs and Wall Street executives.
