According to the Financial Times, the US retail giant, which is due to report its earnings tomorrow, has hired UBS to examine a potential bid for Carrefour’s Brazilian operations, despite the French company claiming the business is not up for sale.

The US government’s widening investigation into six more Swiss private banks could cause the country’s banks to cut all ties with American clients, according to a top London lawyer.

Edward Reed, a partner at London-based Macfarlanes, told Campden: “Swiss private banks will begin to pull out from US exposed deals – they will stop handling not just US nationals, but also green card holders and anyone even remotely affected by tax regulations.”

Family-owned Swatch Group has confirmed it has launched a legal action against UBS in relation to an absolute return fund sold to the watchmaker in 2009.

Biel-based Swatch claims UBS at the time had assured the value of its investment was secure and has filed for compensation amounting to SFr30 million (€23 million).
