Lego's annual results for 2013 have seen it become the world's most profitable toymaker – just a decade after the Danish family firm was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

Its revenue increased by 10% to DKK 25.4 billion (€3.4 billion), while net profit grew 9% to DKK 6.1 billion – beating nearest rival Mattel, maker of Barbie, by 25%. Mattel's net profit was $904 million (€654.8).

The Weston family's Canadian grocery chain, Loblaw, announced revenues of CAD$7.5 billion (€5.5 billion) for the second quarter of 2013 – an increase of 2% compared to the same period last year – and a 14.1% increase in net earnings to CAD$178 million.

European pharmaceutical giant Roche, controlled by the founding family, saw sales for the first quarter of 2012 fall by 1% to CHF11 billion (€9.15 billion) due to the strength of the Swiss franc. However, revenues at constant exchange rate rose by 2%, the Basel-based company said on 12 April.

French family business PPR has announced strong results this week, boosted by its luxury division, but Greece’s Coca-Cola Hellenic has seen its profit plummet by 28%.

PPR, the luxury and retail group controlled by the Pinault family, said revenues jumped 11.1% in 2011 to €12.2 billion, from €11.01 billion in 2010.

India’s third-largest software exporter, family-controlled Wipro, announced on 26 April that its total revenues for 2010 saw a rise of 15% year-on-year, while fellow family-controlled automobile maker Ford reported its best first quarter results in 13 years.

India’s third-largest software exporter, family-controlled Wipro, announced on 26 April that its total revenues for 2010 saw a rise of 15% year-on-year, while fellow family-controlled automobile maker Ford reported its best first quarter results in 13 years.

Wipro, which also manufactures consumer goods and electrical products, said that its total sales rose to $6.98 billion from $6.11 billion the year before. The company’s consumer care segment contributed 9% to the total revenue, while its IT services sector accounted for 76% of the revenues.

Boosted by unexpectedly high sales figures of the new Atlantis brand, revenues at the family-owned company increased 34% to DKK 5.88 billion (€789 million) compared to the same period last year. Net profits for the first half of 2010 were DKK 1.12 billion compared with DKK 684 million for the same period in 2009.

Despite wider problems in the global automobile industry, classical carmaker Morgan Motor Company has recorded strong results, as demand for its iconic convertible remains strong.

According to a report in the Financial Times that cited Company House numbers, the Malvern, Worcestershire-based company saw full-year 2009 pre-tax profit treble to £661,209 on turnover of £26.8m, up from £22.1m the year before.
