Sodexo, the French food services and facilities management conglomerate controlled by the Bellon family, has expanded its UK home care business by buying The Good Care Group (GCG)—a leading player in the UK live-in care market.

The GCG, founded in 2009, provides tailored live-in care services to customers who need physical help to live independently or have complex care needs.

Two of Germany’s largest tech manufacturers—Continental and family-owned Bosch—have bought stakes in Here, the digital mapping service expected to be vital to the development of self-drive cars.

The companies bought 5% apiece for an undisclosed amount, with Bosch’s chairman Dr Volkmar Denner saying the deal affirmed his company was “more than cars”.

LVMH to focus on eyewear market with Marcolin deal

French family-owned luxury giant LVMH have taken a 10% stake in spectacle maker Marcolin as it looks to tighten its grip on the eyewear market.

The news comes just one week after another family-owned eyewear group, Luxottica, and its French rival Essilor agreed to a €46 billion ($49 billion) merger to combat increasing competition from large luxury players, such as LVMH.

Last year was a tumultuous time for markets on the back of fears of a second recession, but some family businesses look to have weathered 2011 remarkably well, reporting record revenues and profits.

Take for example the Bosch Group, the German car parts supplier controlled by descendants of the founding family. Revenues at the Stuttgart-based family business exceeded €50 billion for the very first time last year, according to preliminary figures released by the company this week.

Ford, the family-controlled automaker, today posted better-then-expected full year results, recording a pre-tax operating profit of $454 million – its first for four years. This figure represented a $7.3 billion improvement on last year's losses which totalled nearly $15 billion.
