The Trinchero family is probably raising a big pitcher of margarita to toast their latest acquisition this week. The popularity of the cocktail – made using tequila, orange-flavoured liqueur, lime and salt – in the US has led to Trinchero Family Estates adding a top tequila brand to its portfolio.
TFE has bought Tres Agaves, a company founded in 2008 to help people “simply make the most delicious margaritas on the planet”, according to the group’s website.
Its product lines include not just tequila, but also cocktail-ready agave nectar, a sweetener often used in margaritas, and margarita mixes.
“Tres Agaves is a natural fit for Trinchero Family Estates as we continue to expand our wine and spirits portfolio. One of the reasons our industry continues to grow is the diversity of products we offer to consumers. This will provide a one-stop solution for America’s best selling cocktail – the margarita,” said non-family Bob Torkelson, president and chief operating officer of TFE.
The acquisition also means the US-based family business – owned by the Trincheros since 1948 – will join forces with another family firm. Tres Agaves’s tequila is bottled by El Llano, a Mexico-based, fifth-generation distiller that first began to operate in the tequila industry in 1900 – and TFE is planning to continue this working relationship.
With plenty to cheer about, the families will likely have to raise more than just one pitcher of margarita.
