From Salvatore Ferragamo to Prada and Hermes, many family businesses in the luxury industry have had to deal with counterfeit products. But this week seemed to be the turn of a discount fashion retailer.
Boasting two floors, a store in Dubai was found to be selling clothes and accessories identical to those sold by Primark, part of family-controlled Associated British Foods. The store even pretended to be part of the Weston family’s chain.
However, the family business – the real one – which has more than 200 stores across Europe, doesn’t operate in the United Arab Emirates and is reportedly considering taking legal action.
"We are aware that there is a store in Dubai that purports to be part of our group," Primark said in a letter to Abu Dhabi-based newspaper The National.
"Primark does not operate any stores there and this is not, therefore, a legitimate Primark store. The company is considering its legal options as a matter of urgency," it added.
