Family portrait: the Ambani family

One of India's greatest entrepreneurial success stories, the Ambanis, are also one of its most infamous dynasties, owing to a long-running public feud which broke out between the late patriarch's sons. After a stroke in 1986 left him partially paralysed, Dhirubhai handed control of the petrochemical, textile and communications giant, Reliance Industries, to his two sons. When he succumbed to a second stroke in 2002 he famously died without a will, fuelling the fires of discord which continued to ignite a volatile brotherly quarrel, although reports suggest their frosty relations may be thawing.
