China’s billionaire business families are setting up their own family offices at a phenomenal rate as ageing principals shift their priorities from wealth creation to preservation and succession.

More than three-quarters of Chinese families surveyed by Campden Wealth said they either established or joined a family office after 2010. In the last six years, interest has been growing, and almost one-third reported they began using family office services in either 2018 (13%) or in the first eight months of 2019 (18%).

Pentland consolidates global Speedo portfolio ahead of Olympics

British family business Pentland Group has acquired Speedo North America for $170 million, ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and the competition of many Speedo athletes.

The second-generation $3 billion group announced this week it had entered into a definitive agreement for the business with apparel company PVH Corp. Speedo International licensed the Speedo trademark to a PVH subsidiary for use in North America and the Caribbean.

Hans Van Bylen is to take over at German consumer goods maker Henkel after its incumbent chief executive Kasper Rorsted left to become the new CEO of Adidas.

Van Bylen, Henkel’s former head of the beauty care business, joined the family-controlled firm in 1984 and has been a member of the management board since 2005.

The initiative is the first of many more planned by the CDP as part of its plans to invest in domestic companies and help boost the country’s economy.

Kumiko Otsuka, 47, succeeded her father to the helm of the Japanese furniture retailer in 2009, and has been attempting to give the company more mass market appeal in order to compete with brands like Ikea.

Koo Ji-eun, who is also a next gen of the Samsung empire through her mother’s side, was appointed vice president of LG Group's catering subsidiary Ourhome this month, 11 years after she joined the company.

Koo is the daughter of Ourhome chairman Koo Cha-hak, and her uncles are LG Group chairman Koo Bon-moo and vice-chairman Koo Bon-joon.

Italian confectioner Michele Ferrero, who created Kinder eggs and Ferrero Rocher for his eponymous family business, died over the weekend, aged 89.

The second gen passed away in Monaco, where he lived, on Valentine’s Day – one of the chocolate industry’s most important dates of the year. He had been suffering from illness for the past couple of months.

Although the business has been in the third generation for almost two decades, Ferrero was considered the main decision maker.
