Passion investment

February 26, 2012

Some old movie posters such as Dracula, Frankenstein and The Mummy are selling for hundreds of thousands of euros. Toby Walne looks at the increasing demand for rare ones.

Vintage movie posters offer far more than a chance to share in a passion for films. The finest early posters are highly collectible works of art that have enjoyed great investment returns in recent years.

The record paid for a movie poster is £397,762 (€481,713) for an art deco advert for the 1927 futuristic film Metropolis directed by Fritz Lang. The sepia-coloured poster stands seven foot tall and provides an image of monumental skyscrapers with the iconic beautiful female robot, Maria, staring out.

Legend has it that when the Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont, an early pioneer of powered flight, was getting to grips with aeroplanes back in the early 20th century he rather sensibly decided he needed a timepiece that he could read without taking his hands off the joystick.

Once upon a time a gentleman might learn the importance of good manners the hard way. Before you knew it there would be pistols at dawn and the prospects of a painful death.

It is this romantic sense of honour and daring among the ruling classes, where risking life was preferable to losing face, which has led to a soaring demand for collectable vintage duelling pistols – and prices rising by up to 50% in the past decade.

Picasso’s five nudes Les Demoiselles d’Avignon helped popularise the beauty of tribal masks. Nearly 100 years later they remain hugely popular – and very collectable. Toby Walne reports

Tribal masks offer fascinating and exotic investment opportunities that have enjoyed some impressive returns in recent years. Most collectable pieces were picked up as colonial souvenirs and relatively worthless trinkets by European explorers travelling the world in search of conquests between the 18th and early 20th century.
