The Rockefellers, a family synonymous with oil and wealth in the US, are among a coalition of ultra wealthy investors that have today announced they will divest $50 billion in fossil fuel assets.

The announcement came just one day before the UN Climate Summit opens in New York.

The family is part of the Global Divest-Invest initiative that encourages individuals from all walks of life to divest from fossil fuels and invest in climate solutions.

The US started the process by announcing a withdrawal from quantitative easing in December last year. Mark Carney in the UK surprised markets in early June by calling an interest rate rise as soon as August this year. In the meantime, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced further monetary easing, while the Bank of Japan continues to pursue an aggressive quantitative easing strategy.

US women are showing a greater interest in alternative investments than men, according to new research, challenging traditional stereotypes that female investors are risk averse.

According to research by US investment firm MainStay Investments, 60% of women surveyed expect alternatives to become a core part of their portfolio over the next five to 10 years.

By comparison, only 47% of men expect the likes of commodities, private equity, and hedge funds to become a “mainstream” part of their investment holdings over that same period.

Almost 60% of high net worth investors feel bullish about the investment outlook over the next 12 months, according to a new survey, the highest confidence has been since the global economic crash of 2008.

Almost 60% of high net worth investors feel bullish about the investment outlook over the next 12 months, according to a new survey, the highest confidence has been since the global economic crash of 2008.

Financial advisory company deVere Group said the number of investors who reported feeling bullish was up four percentage points from its 2013 poll to 57%.

The last time investor confidence levels were higher than this level was in 2007, when 59% of high net worth investors said they were feeling bullish in the annual international poll.

From the late 1990s to the 2008 crisis, the price of oil rose 1,062%, while copper shot up 487%, according to investment house Pimco. Behind this meteoric rise were emerging markets where wealth was growing quickly, causing increased demand for food, energy and the inputs of industrialisation and urbanisation.
