Family-controlled firms will be represented for the first time at the California State Capitol, in a bid to stop “new laws and regulations that hinder a family business's ability to compete and grow”.

Family-controlled firms will be represented for the first time at the California State Capitol, in a bid to stop “new laws and regulations that hinder a family business's ability to compete and grow”.

That’s according to Family Business Association, a new group founded this year by 22 “prominent” family businesses, including Boyett Petroleum, Owen-Dunn Insurance Services and Ramos Oil Company.

Family Firm Institute revealed at its annual conference in Brussels that it has grown its international membership strongly as the Boston-based association engages with more family businesses and their advisers.

The group, which earlier this year appointed UK-based Mark Evans, a director at the UK private bank Coutts, as its chairman, now has 40% of its members from outside of the US.

The chief executive of the Family Business Network International, Olivier de Richoufftz, is to step down after eight years in the position. 

The chief executive of the Family Business Network International, Olivier de Richoufftz, is to step down after eight years in the position.

De Richoufftz said he would continue in his current role until after the FBN summit in London in early October, when a successor is also expected to be announced.

The Frenchman, who worked closely with Thierry Lombard, the chairman of the FBN and partner of the Swiss private bank Lombard Odier, was instrumental in growing the membership to more than 5,000 today from just 1,600 when he joined.

Family businesses are big in the Middle East – various estimates say around 90% of all companies in the region are controlled by families. But its importance was further underscored this week with the launch of the Family Business Network GCC, the first of its kind in the area.

Covering members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the network will be based in Dubai.

Leading family firm Firmenich, a Swiss-based fragrance creator, has been named the winner of the 16th annual IMD-Lombard Odier Global Family Business Award. 

Leading family firm Firmenich, a Swiss-based fragrance creator, has been named the winner of the 16th annual IMD-Lombard Odier Global Family Business Award.

The company, which is in its fourth generation and was founded in 1895 by Philippe Chuit, was awarded the prize at the 22nd Summit of the Family Business Network International in Singapore, which took place from 27 to 29 October.
