The 82-year-old co-founder of iconic Italian fashion retailer Benetton has taken over control of the family business from non-family executives as it struggles with mounting losses. 

In 1965 Luciano Benetton (pictured) established the company with his three siblings that became famous for colourful knitwear and provocative advertising campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s.

He served as Benetton's chairman from 1978 to 2012.

According to a spokesman for the Indian family business, a merger of the group’s subsidiary companies “is happening”, but the “Nanda family is not upping its stake”.

In a statement issued on 24 April, the Benetton Group said Luciano Benetton has officially resigned and the group's board of directors has nominated his eldest son Alessandro (pictured), previously executive deputy chairman, as his successor.

Two of Italy’s most prominent business families have agreed a share-swap deal that will see the Benetton family end its involvement in construction company Impregilo in exchange for the Gavio family’s stake in motorway group Autostrade Sud America.

Two of Italy’s most prominent business families have agreed a share-swap deal that will see the Benetton family end its involvement in construction company Impregilo in exchange for the Gavio family’s stake in motorway group Autostrade Sud America.

In a statement released on 25 February, Atlantia, the highway operator controlled by the Benetton family, said it sold its 33% stake in IGLI, the holding company which controls 29.96% of Impregilo.

The family behind Benetton Group is considering making an offer to buy the shares it doesn’t already own, in a bid to take the Italian fashion retailer private.

Through its holding company Edizione, the Benetton family said it is considering buying the 33% of the company's shares that are listed on the Milan Stock Exchange.

Edizione controls 67% of the family business, which is famous for its coloured knitwear and owns brands such as Sisley and Playlife.

Benetton, the Italian family-controlled clothing empire, looks set to raise a few eyebrows, as it unveiled a new worldwide communication campaign that features political and faith leaders like Pope Benedict XVI, German chancellor Angela Merkel, French president Nicolas Sarkozy and Barack Obama kissing.

The campaign, created by the newly formed UNHATE Foundation supported by the Benetton group, shows political and religious leaders sharing a kiss to promote the understanding between peoples, faiths and cultures.
