Reckitt Benckiser CEO apologises for steriliser scandal

Rakesh Kapoor, the non-family chief executive of British multinational consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser, has apologised for the sale of deadly disinfectants linked to fatal lung injuries in South Korea.

The apology came in the same week as Reckitt shareholders protested the chief executive’s £23.2 million ($33.6 million) pay package.

National Amusements third-gen Shari Redstone was the only vote from the board of directors at Viacom, her family’s media empire, opposing the appointment of Philippe Dauman as chairman on Thursday.

Her father, Sumner Redstone, 92, announced his retirement on Thursday. He had announced his retirement as chairman of the family’s other media empire CBS on Wednesday, where he will be replaced by its existing CEO and president Leslie Moonves.

American media mogul Sumner Redstone has hinted his daughter Shari could succeed him, but even if she doesn’t, the 89-year-old still wants to keep his business interests in the family.

Redstone, who has controlling interests in Viacom and CBS Corp through holding company National Amusements, told the Wall Street Journal that no decision had been made on who would succeed him. But he dismissed suggestions that current Viacom chief executive Philippe Dauman was a shoo-in.

Shari agreed to buy Rising Star Media, the company she co-founded in 2002, with fellow co-founder Paul Heath for an as yet undisclosed amount. Shari will serve as chairman of the newly independent business, which owns the top five grossing theatres in Russia.

Michael Redstone, Sumner's nephew, claimed he was owed millions of dollars by the family business after a share sale in 1984. However, after a trial which saw Sumner, Michael and various other family members testify, the Massachusetts Superior Court ruled against Michael and in favour of Sumner and his cinema and broadcasting company.
