The Arab world’s billionaire families have been revealed in an inaugural survey published by Forbes Middle East.

With fortunes of up to $8 billion each, the 15 families listed have made their fortunes in an array of sectors, with several running conglomerates spanning multiple industries.

Topping the chart is the Olayan family, who owe their $8 billion to the Olayan Group, built up by the late Suliman Olayan. Along with partnerships with international brands such as Coca-Cola, the group is a stock market and real estate investor.

Bahraini businessman Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo, chairman of family conglomerate Kanoo Group in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, has died, aged 72.

Bahraini businessman Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo, chairman of family conglomerate Kanoo Group in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, has died, aged 72.

Kanoo, who helped the company expand from its early shipping roots, died over the weekend, after a three-decade battle with diabetes.

Kanoo turned the company, established in 1890 by Haji Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo, into one of the largest family-owned businesses in the Gulf.

Today the group is focussed on retail, logistics, chemicals, shipping, oil and gas, and travel.

Business means family business in the Gulf Cooperation Council – comprising the six states bordering the Persian Gulf, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Among the best known are such firms as the Kanoo Group in Bahrain and the Al Masaood Group in the UAE. Many, such as Obeikan, the Al Khorayef Group and the Zamil Group, come from Saudi Arabia, which is by far the region’s most populous country.
