The news comes several weeks after Piech stirred controversy when he allegedly told Volkswagen’s internal investigators that he confronted former chief executive Martin Winterkorn over the emissions scandal in March 2015.

JAB Holding, the investment vehicle of the Reimann family, has completed its $1.3 billion acquisition of US-based doughnut and coffee company Krispy Kreme.

In a two-paragraph statement, the two companies confirmed the completion of the sale this week, and added that Krispy Kreme will become a privately held company.

Family-controlled carmaker Volkswagen has admitted it deliberately tampered with thousands of its cars’ emission testing software to deceive US environmental authorities.

It faces an initial fine of $18 billion for the 11 million cars affected, equivalent to its net annual profits, but if further investigations find the rigging is more widespread this could rise.

The German carmaker posted revenues of €197 billion in 2013.

Volkswagen chairman, Ferdinand Piech, 76, has refuted speculation he is soon to step down due to poor health and has said he will serve out the rest of his contract.

He made the statement to reporters at the Frankfurt car show in response to reports last week that company chief executive Martin Winterkorn was soon to takeover.

Piech’s contract, extended last year, runs into 2017.

It was rumoured that Volkswagen finance chief Hans Dieter Poetsch would replace Winterkorn until a longer-term solution was found.

The families behind Porsche SE are considering branching away from the car industry, as plans to combine automakers Porsche and Volkswagen gain momentum.

At Porsche SE’s annual general meeting on 25 June, the Porsche and Piech families, which control 90% the holding company’s common shares, voted unanimously to change the business’s charter.

The move means the holding company can invest in new business fields, such as energy, real estate and materials for the auto industry.

That’s according to Albrecht Enders, professor of strategy and innovation at Swiss-based business school IMD, who was commenting after Volkswagen proposed Ursula Piech, wife of chairman Ferdinand Piech, join the automaker's board.
