In the clearest sign yet that a deal is imminent, the UK's Office of Fair Trading posted an invitation yesterday asking for comment on the "anticipated acquisition of the Independent and Independent on Sunday by Lebedev Holdings Limited."

The O’Reilly family, the majority shareholder in Ireland-based publishers Independent News and Media, has seen its stake fall from 28.5% to 15% in a rights issue on Tuesday.

The O'Reilly family, the majority shareholder in Ireland-based publishers Independent News and Media, has seen its stake fall from 28.5% to 15% in a rights issue on Tuesday. 

A majority of shareholders did subscribe to the rights issue, which raised the debt-laden publishing group €90.2 million.

The shareholders of the family-controlled Independent News and Media have rejected the attempt of dissenting shareholder Denis O’Brien to make key changes to the board.

The shareholders of the family-controlled Independent News and Media have rejected the attempt of dissenting shareholder Denis O'Brien to make key changes to the board.

O'Brien requested the extraordinary general meeting, held on 3 November, to vote on the future of the non-family chairman Dr Brian Hillery and the senior independent director Baroness Margaret Jay. Both have the backing of the controlling O'Reilly family and each kept their positions in the shareholder vote by a 65% majority.

Ron Walker, the non-family chairman of Fairfax Media, announced yesterday he will not stand for re-election after two board members, both of the founding Fairfax family, said they would no longer support his tenure as chairman.
