If there is one thing that a philanthropist wants, it’s bang for their buck. One way to increase the chances that your money does real good is to address a problem where the possibility of success is great, and it’ll be clear what success looks like.

Take, for example, literacy rates among the underprivileged in India – and especially among girls. Female literacy there is appallingly low. Nationwide, just two-thirds of women can read and write, a number that falls to just half in the north-west state of Rajasthan.

Mexican telecommunications baron Carlos Slim has overtaken Microsoft owner Bill Gates and legendary investor Warren Buffet to take the top spot in a list of the world’s richest people.

Slim, who runs the empire with his family, has an estimated fortune of $53.5 billion, which he increased by $18.5 billion last year. He is the first non-American to top the list in 16 years. Gates and Buffet come in second and third with an estimated $53 billion and $47 billion respectively.

Megha Mittal, daughter-in-law of the steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, has bought the insolvent German luxury retailer Escada AG, the company announced on Friday.

The financial details of the deal have not yet been revealed, however the statement said it had made the agreement to sell the business to Megha through one of the Mittal Family Trusts.

Some of India's most affluent families have dominated the list of the country's 40 most wealthy individuals. Topping the Forbes list, with an estimated fortune of $20.8 billion, is Mukesh Ambani (pictured). His brother Anil, with whom he has an infamously turbulent relationship, came third with a fortune of $12.5 billion.

Second on the list is Lakshmi Mittal, head of steel giant ArcelorMittal. Despite a tough few months for his company, Mittal is still worth an estimated $20.5 billion.

Microsoft owner Bill Gates has been over taken in a world rich list by a family business owner.

Microsoft owner Bill Gates has been overtaken in a world rich list by a family business owner. Carlos Slim, (pictured), who runs the Mexican telecommunications empire with his family, has been ranked second in a list of the world's richest people after narrowly being beaten to the top spot.

Warren Buffet tops the list with an estimated worth of $62 billion. Slim has $60 billion while Microsoft owner Bill Gates, who has topped the list for more than a decade, is ranked third with $58 billion.
