Three family businesses in Europe and Brazil have reported strong quarterly results this week, while Italian media conglomerate Mediaset and Japanese carmaker Toyota have seen their profits plummet.

In Germany, Henkel, the consumer goods company controlled by the eponymous family, said on 9 May that net profit increased by 30.3% to €378 million during the first quarter of the year, from €290 million during the same period last year.

Mediaset, the Italian media group controlled by the Berlusconi family, has sold its stake in Dutch production company Endemol.

Mediaset, the Italian media group controlled by the Berlusconi family, has sold its stake in Dutch production company Endemol.

In a statement released on 3 April, the Milan-based family business, which is the country’s largest commercial broadcaster, said it sold 6% of the TV producer’s debt, representing Mediaset’s entire stake.

Mediaset, the group controlled by Silvio Berlusconi and his family, will reduce its stake in Endemol to less than 10%, as the production house attempts to restructure its €2.8 billion debt through a debt-for-equity swap.

The Netherlands-based company, which produces TV shows such as Big Brother and Deal or No Deal, said it reached an agreement in principle with more than two-thirds of its lenders that will see them reducing Endemol's debt in exchange for a stake in the business.
