French couturier Givenchy, who designed for Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman and Jackie Kennedy, died in his sleep near Paris on 10 March at the age of 91.

Demand for meat drives Cargill profits

Cargill, the US’s biggest private company, has made its largest profit in six years thanks to high consumer demand for meat.

The company’s protein business was the biggest contributor to its $3.04 billion adjusted earnings for the year ending 31 May, up 85% from $1.64 billion in the previous financial year. Net profit was $2.84 billion.

David MacLennan, chief executive, attributed the strong result to a two-year restructuring effort and favourable market.

The international finance centre found 88% of practitioners it surveyed pointed to the loss of control as their greatest challenge in advising Chinese clients.

Sixty per cent of successful entrepreneurs come from a family that has a history of business ownership, according to a new report released by BNP Paribas Wealth Management, and the effect is especially strong in emerging markets.

The trend is most prevalent in Taiwan, Spain, Poland, the Gulf countries, and Turkey, where more than 75% have a family legacy of entrepreneurialism.

The trend is shifting in younger generations, however, and entrepreneurs in developed economies are also less likely to come from family business backgrounds.
