The number of wealthy foreign nationals given UK investor visas since 2008 increased six-fold, led by Russians looking to take advantage of the country’s safe haven status.

The number of wealthy foreign nationals given UK investor visas since 2008 increased six-fold, led by Russians looking to take advantage of the country’s safe haven status.

“They want an EU passport and the UK is seen as the premier safe haven,” said Yuri Botiuk, a partner at law firm McGrigors, which released the figures.

Last year, Russians accounted for a fifth of those given investor visas, which allow those with at least £1 million (€1.2 million) to invest to stay in the UK for three years.
