UK couples are increasingly avoiding the courts in divorce cases due to media interest in proceedings, which sees their assets, financial arrangements and other personal details become public, according to a local law firm.

UK couples are increasingly avoiding the courts in divorce cases due to media interest in proceedings, which sees their assets, financial arrangements and other personal details become public, according to a local law firm.

Couples can request reporting restrictions, explains UK firm Hugh James, but are required to alert the media to their application for privacy to give them the opportunity to contest it.

A third gen of the Walmart dynasty is facing a difficult divorce from her husband of six years, after filing a civil lawsuit claiming he stole money from her during their marriage.

Paige Laurie is divorcing her husband Patrick "Bo" Dubbert citing irreconcilable differences, but also lodged a civil suit on the grounds he siphoned cash from a business they operated together.

Laurie, the granddaughter of Bud Walton, the brother of Walmart founder Sam Walton, and Dubbert owned a shopping centre in Malibu that Dubbert managed.

Following in the footsteps of another Australian media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, Consolidated Press Holdings third-gen James Packer has announced his divorce from his wife, Erica Baxter.

The couple were married in the French Riviera in 2007, in a ceremony attended by members of the Murdoch family, as well as movie star Tom Cruise, among others.

In a statement released to media on Friday, Packer said the couple remained close friends and that their three children would be their priority moving forward.

England has long been out of step with much of the rest of the world when it comes to the enforceability of pre-nuptial agreements. In July, the headlines which greeted the Court of Appeal's landmark judgment in Radmacher v Granatino proclaimed that England was finally in step with the rest of the world: if you have a pre-nup, you can rely on it in the English Courts. The reality is more complicated. The ruling is the clearest indication yet that the English Courts will give significant weight to pre-nups, but wealthy individuals and families must still beware.
