In the last 10 years, the classic car market has been the strongest of all the alternative markets and it’s also true that in the last 12 to 16 months we have had a slightly downward or sideways market as well.

Almost 40,000 exhibitors, buyers, restorers and enthusiasts attended the London Classic Car Show, the capital’s premier classic car collection, at Excel London on 15-18 February. Some 700 of the world’s finest classic cars were on display, with a combined estimated value of more than £300 million ($419 million).

Classic cars have topped a new passion investment index released this week, while when it comes to fine art, traditional Chinese works have provided the most lucrative returns.

According to The Coutts Index: Objects of Desire classic cars saw a 257% return on investment over a seven-and-a-half year period, starting in 2005, well ahead of the next most profitable passion investment, classic watches, which saw returns of 176%.
