A few exceptions aside, what is striking about many of Canada's largest family businesses is that they are little known abroad. While these domestically-focused firms have been striving so far, it remains to be seen how they will perform if Canada's economy trips up.

Family businesses are key drivers of Canada’s economy, accounting for at least 45% of GDP, and numbering among them many of the country’s top firms, including global powerhouses such as Thomson Reuters and Bombardier.

Toronto-based family business Canadian Tire has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award for retailing success, with second-gen Martha Billes due to accept the award on behalf of her family.

Toronto-based family business Canadian Tire has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award for retailing success, with second-gen Martha Billes due to accept the award on behalf of her family.

The automotive and hardware retailer was co-founded by AJ and JW Billes in 1922. Starting as a small tyre shop, it has since grown to almost 500 stores.

Family businesses are alive and well in the US, with the top 100 generating approximately $1.6 trillion to America’s $14.6 trillion GDP in 2010. Just under half of the top 100 are owned outright by the family, a higher proportion than in Europe, where Campden’s top 100 family business for the region found that less than a third were fully controlled by the family.
