Family businesses tend to be small and niche, but, collectively, their influence on the global economy is significant.

Those which belong to Germany’s Mittelstand are at the heart of the country’s manufacturing miracle. Family companies are scattered right across Asia. Private banks in Switzerland are thriving, despite the credit crisis. Italy is kept going by a string of family businesses scattered across the north.

Investment company Berkshire Hathaway, headed by billionaire Warren Buffett, announced on 14 March that it will buy speciality chemicals company Lubrizol, in one of the largest deals in the Omaha, Nebraska-based company’s history.

Investment company Berkshire Hathaway, headed by billionaire Warren Buffett, announced on 14 March that it will buy speciality chemicals company Lubrizol, in one of the largest deals in the Omaha, Nebraska-based company’s history.

In a statement, Berkshire Hathaway said that the deal was valued at $9.7 billion and will be finalised by the third quarter of the year. Buffett said: “Lubrizol is exactly the sort of company with which we love to partner - the global leader in several market applications.”

Marmon Holdings, an international association that is owned by the Pritzker family and made up of more than 125 manufacturing and service businesses with combined revenues of $7 billion, is to sell 60% of its shares to Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate owned and managed by billionaire Warren Buffett, for $4.5 billion.

The remaining 40% will be acquired by Berkshire Hathaway through staged acquisitions over a five to six year period. Prior to closing, Marmon will make a substantial distribution of cash and certain assets to the selling shareholders.
