If you’ve ever wondered how you can ensure your family remains wealthy long after you’ve gone, then wonder no more.
Because according to research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, the answer is simple. Just have a small family.
The researchers found that having fewer children resulted in increased economic success and social position for descendants across up to four generations.
Co-author Dr David Lawson, from the Department of Anthropology at University College London, said: "One of our most interesting findings is that being from an initially wealthy household makes the benefits of small family size even bigger.”
The study relied on data from the Uppsala Multigenerational Birth Cohort Study, research that tracks 14,000 people born in Sweden in the early 1900s and their descendants to the present day.
