Family consolidates control at Estée Lauder

The granddaughter of the founder and namesake of the Estée Lauder Companies has been promoted for the second time in two years, continuing the tradition of family leadership within the US-based firm.

Jane Lauder becomes global president, general manager of the Origins and Ojon business units, two of the 28 brands the company owns. She has responsibility for the overall strategic direction, global development, management and growth of both brands.

Fabrizio Freda, non-family president and CEO of Estée Lauder, said the 37-year-old represents "the family values which are at the core of our company."

Jane Lauder is daughter of Ronald S Lauder who retired from the firm's board of directors last year as part of the wider succession plan that saw Freda take overall operational control. Jane Lauder's cousin William Lauder took over from his father as chairman on the board. (Continue reading here)

As a result of this seamless transition, Ronald and Leonard Lauder were voted campdenFB.com's Family Business Leaders of the Year in 2009. (Continue reading here)

Jane Lauder was named senior vice president, general manager of Origins in June 2008 after serving as senior vice president, global marketing for Clinique. She first joined the family business in 1996 and serves on the board of directors.

Estée Lauder, one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of quality skin care, makeup, fragrance and hair care products, recorded sales of $7.3 billion in 2009 and has seen its share price double in the past 12 months. The founding Lauder family controls about 88% of its voting shares.
