Families learn from the best at alternative investment conference

By James Beech

More than 30 of the world’s most successful strategic investors will share their expertise with business family leaders at Europe’s most influential family investment conference this month.

Dr Ernest Boles, vice chairman of private equity and real estate at the German family firm Harald Quandt Capital, will bring his 30 years of experience in international finance and law, as chairman of the Campden Wealth Family Alternative Investment Conference, in London on 26-27 February.

Boles will welcome significant private investors, business and financial families and their family office executives to the popular, exclusive and confidential event. The two-day programme of speeches, discussions and networking sessions will connect peers-to-peers with the right mix of investments and structures for enhanced returns and a “safe haven” for capital at a time where alternative categories are being reinvented, Campden organisers said.

The opening keynote speaker will be John Phelan, co-founder and managing partner of MSD Capital, US tech entrepreneur Michael Dell’s private family investment office. Phelan will explain how he has “put wealth to work” over the past 20 years, how he navigates shifting markets and valuations, and the strategic importance of organisational culture on investment success.

Irish businessman and information technologist Walter O’Brien, whose life inspired the CBS-TV drama Scorpion, will discuss in his keynote address the impacts technologies like cryptocurrency and automation may have on society and business in the next decade.

Daniel Aegerter, principal and chairman of Armada Investment Group in Switzerland, set-up his family office at the age of 31, after the merger of his software company Tradex Technologies to Ariba for $5.6 billion in 2000. Aegerter will share his experiences of managing his family’s substantial, diversified portfolio and examine the trends he anticipates will have a lasting and profitable impact.

Family principals and private investors looking to co-invest with like-minded peers will join the post-conference Family Co-Investment Workshop at another private venue in London on 28 February. Qualified family principles and senior executives will share insights and experiences, concerns and solutions at the workshop which enables participants to align interests and forge relationships to conduct business in the long term.
